Airport — Oaxaca City, Oaxaca
Airport • (O)
Most international flights to the city of Oaxaca (OAX, Aeropuerto Internacional de Oaxaca Xoxocotlán) have same day connections through México City, except for Continental, which has non-stop flights to/from Houston 3-4 times a week depending on the season. Domestically, there are several flights daily to/from México City, as well as other destinations, including the small Pacific coast resort cities of Puerto Escondido and Huatulco (30 minutes), the flights replete with stunning views of the rugged southern coastal mountain range, the Sierra Madre del Sur.
A taxi between the airport and the centro will cost about Mex$140. For a taxi to the airport, have the front desk at the hotel call for one, or pick one up at the taxi stand on the north side of the Alameda de León.
Transportación Terrestre Aeropuerto runs colectivo vans between the airport and the Centro for Mex$52, and, for just a few pesos more, anywhere else in the city. Upon arrival at the airport, after exiting customs, look for the ticket window to the right of the main entrance to the terminal. For transportation to the airport from anywhere in the city, call a day beforehand or drop the office located on the Alameda de León plaza to schedule a time to be picked up. (Listing below.)
No buses stop at the airport. Ordinario second-class buses, however, traveling along Highway 175 from the Second-class Bus Station to San Bartolo Coyotepec and Ocotlán, will stop on demand and drop passengers off on the side of the road about 1km (0.6mi) from the airport. Ask the driver beforehand to stop at the turnoff to the airport.
The airport has some amenities — a decent restaurant; a newsstand with a basic selection of international newspapers, magazines, and paperbacks; a bank for exchanging currency (Mon – Fri 8 am – 7 pm, Sat 8 am– 2 pm); an ATM for withdrawing pesos; and several car rentals companies (see listings below).
International airline passengers are charged a departure tax for leaving México, which is usually levied and paid for when they buy their tickets. Make sure that all tickets have this charge on it. Otherwise, this tax is levied at the time of departure and is only payable in pesos or US dollars (USD$38).
Immigration (Migración) and Customs (Aduana) are both located at the airport. Upon arrival, tourist permits for international passengers are stamped by immigration officials and customs declarations are made at the airport. (To expedite matters, both forms are usually provided in flight by the airlines.) Hang on to tourist permit for the duration of the trip. Upon departure, immigration officials will ask to see it. A lost or stolen tourist permit should always be replaced before leaving México. Otherwise, be prepared for hassles with immigration officials and a possible fine to boot. Besides, even though it might take a few hours, getting a replacement isn't that difficult. To get a replacement, bring proof of arrival date in México — stamped passport, copy of lost tourist permit, or airline ticket — to the Immigration office (www.inm.gob.mx) at the airport (951-511-5733, Mon - Fri 9 am - 1 pm). Alternatively, bring documentation to the downtown Immigration office at Independencia 709 (951-502-0004, daily 9 am - 1 pm) across the street from the Alameda de León.
Méxican airlines have been hit hard financially by of the global economic recession that began in 2008. Three carriers that were operating out of the Oaxaca airport — Azteca, Alma de México, and Avolar — have ceased operations due to financial difficulties. A fourth, Aviacsa, has been shutdown by the Méxican government because of back fees owed, whether they will be able to resume service is unclear.
