Punta Cometa Reserva Ecológica, (E)
In addition to stunning views of Mazunte and the Pacific from the headlands of Punta Cometa, the strip of land jutting out from the west end of Mazunte, this protected open space has a small and completely undeveloped beach, Playa Cometa. To get there from the main road, turn left onto Calle Rinconcito, one block west of bridge. Continue for 200 meters to the intersection of Camino Mermejito. Turn right onto Mermejito, heading uphill, steeply, the road quickly turning to dirt, for 200 meters until you come to a small dirt road on your left. At the intersection there are a half dozen or so signs for various cabanas nearby. Turn left and continue for 40 meters, following the sign to Alta Mira Bungalows. Turn right onto thr first dirt road, passing in front of Alta Mira, continuing for another 300 meters until you come to the entrance to the park. To hike the trails along the Pacific facing headlands, fork right immediately upon entering the park. Otherwise, to go straight to Playa Cometa, fork left and follow the trail for about 200 meters. Soon, the trail starts descending, with stunning views of Mazunte on the left. After about 200 meters, the trail flattens out and passes a couple of trails on the right. Both go straight to the Playa Cometa, though he second is wider and flatter. There are no facilities at the beach, so be sure to bring lots of water and sunscreen. In all, its about a two kilometer walk from the intersection of Rinconcito and the main road. Alternatively, take a taxi to the entrance to the Reserva. From there, it's only about a fifteen minute walk.

  • Open daily during daylight hours only. Free.
